What's this really about?

On Sept. 18th, 2000 the General Assembly made the UN Millennium Declaration “to reaffirm our faith in the Organization and its Charter as indispensable foundations of a more peaceful, prosperous and just world.”  Further, “We consider certain fundamental values to be essential to international relations in the twenty-first century.  These include:  Freedom, Equality, Solidarity, Tolerance, Respect for Nature, Shared Responsibility, (paraphrased).  In order to translate these shared values into actions, we have identified key objectives to which we assign special significance, [as follows:] Peace, Security and Disarmament; Development and Poverty Eradication; Protecting our common environment; Human rights, Democracy and Good Governance; Protecting the Vulnerable; Meeting the Special Needs of Africa; Strengthening the UN” and so on.

As the world is great and we represent a small part, I suggest that we focus the photo contest where we are; where examples of these values are most accessible to us, in our own community, i.e. Freedom, Equality, Solidarity, Respect for Nature, Shared Responsibility, representations of which are all around us, (and sometimes when they are not).  They are common but not so common as to take for granted, rather we should promote ways to recognize and thereby strengthen the importance of these values in our community.  It is from these values, we consider “our foundation”, that the other larger and broader goals, (i.e. the MDG’s), grow from and thereby we resolve to make our contribution to strengthen the whole.  So without further adieu, I make a motion, that these values be the themes we promote for the “2010 UNAUSA-Hawaii Division Photo Contest”, in categories we shall determine.

  • Freedom
  • Solidarity
  • Tolerance
  • Respect for Nature
  • Shared Responsibility
